ARTEFERRO GATES FOR MILAN’S STAZIONE CENTRALE
Stazione Centrale redevelopment plan: the first of the 35 gates to protect the Galleria delle Carrozze was installed.
In the early morning of today, Wednesday 11 November, the installation of the gates to protect the Galleria delle Carrozze in Milano Centrale, the second largest Italian railway station in terms of size and traffic volume, were started. The large monumental space of the Gallery, which connects the IV Novembre and Luigi di Savoia squares and which overlooks Piazza Duca d’Aosta, houses 500 square meters of boutiques.
The design and installation of the closing elements will be carried out by Gonzato Contract (Ind.i.a. spa) based on a design agreed with the Superintendency of Architectural Heritage of Milan. The client is Stazioni Nord Facility, part of the Navarra Group (Italiana Costruzioni). The intervention is part of a process of recovery and development of the entire building, operated by Grandi Stazioni, a subsidiary of Ferrovie (Railways) and owned by large private industrial groups.
In total there are 35 gates, of which 10 are fixed and 25 can be opened (some of these are motorised), with a height of 2 metres and lengths varying from 2 to 9 metres, made of wrought iron, metallised and powder-coated. In order to meet the need for practicality and space, a double-leaf folding gate will be installed on the main façade, for a total length of 9 metres. The sizing of the gates has been specifically designed to contain any impact from the crowd, with a resistance to thrust greater than 3 kN/m. The gates will be installed using only ground fixings by means of steel flanges equipped with anchor bolts, specifically designed to avoid drilling the Carso stone with which the shoulders are made, thus allowing their total release.
The installation of all the metal elements will be performed by the experts of Gonzato Contract, a division of Ind.i.a. spa dedicated to major works, while the production was entrusted to the artisans of Arteferro, a division of Ind.i.a. spa dedicated to the production of ornamental semi-finished products.
A note from the president of Ind.i.a. spa, Arch. Bruno Gonzato «We are honoured to have been entrusted with this important intervention, carried out in collaboration with the local Superintendency for Architectural Heritage. Stazione Centrale is an area of excellence located in the heart of Milan, a centre for services to the city and the shopping streets as well as the main hub for high-speed trains and connections with the rest of Europe. We are fully satisfied with the final result, both from an aesthetic and functional point of view: the commercial activities inside the Galleria delle Carrozze, which had been already closed to vehicular traffic for some time, will now enjoy the protection of wrought iron gates built from scratch but in full respect of the architecture of the building».
